From Portland, Oregon - a city known for its leadership in design, innovation and sustainability - our team was determined to produce a new approach to affordable housing that addressed cost, time, quality, unit design and sustainability. NAYA Family Center was the sponsor for the project, and their leaders sought innovative ways to house individuals and families in need with dignity, that would also put at-risk children in a more stable home. NAYA’s social services will provide additional support for the residents in Kah San Chako Haws.

Portland has the ninth largest Native population in the US, and Native poverty levels are higher than other demographic groups. Housing is a key part of moving families out of poverty and there is a pressing need to build more high quality affordable housing at a more rapid pace. Our team was committed to addressing these challenges.

Funders: Kah San Chako Haws was a project that teamed federal, state and local funds with funds from one of Oregon’s leading foundations and a leading West Coast Bank. All funders were interested in being involved in an innovative affordable housing project that housed families and individuals who would greatly benefit from a stable home.

The City of Portland Bureau of Housing provided 70% of the funding for this project. Portland’s Home Forward provided nine Section 8 vouchers. The State of Oregon provided funds for early stage development. Meyer Memorial Trust provided critical funds for site acquisition and pre-development. Capital Pacific Bank provided a commercial loan used for gap funding for site construction.

Thank you Portland Housing Bureau, Meyer Memorial Trust, Capital Pacific Bank, State of Oregon, Home Forward and HUD for believing in Kah San Chako Haws and investing in innovation.
